Lightning Protection

Zero Sequence Earthing specialises in lightning protection for transmission lines, substations, communication towers and sensitive sites. Our services extend to mining sites with surface and underground workings, ensuring optimal protection against lightning strikes and damage to infrastructure.

What is Lightning Protection

Lightning protection, often referred to as lightning rod or lightning conductor systems, is a set of measures and devices designed to protect structures, buildings and electrical systems from the destructive effects of lightning strikes. Lightning is a natural atmospheric electrical discharge that can carry extremely high voltages and currents. When it strikes a building or other structures, it can cause significant damage, fires and even pose risks to human safety.

  1. Lightning Rods (Air Terminals): These are metal rods or rods with pointed tips mounted at the highest points of a structure. They provide a preferred path for lightning to strike, safely conducting the electrical energy down to the ground.
  2. Down Conductors: Metal conductors, often in the form of copper or aluminium cables, connect the lightning rods to the grounding system. They guide the lightning discharge away from the structure.
  3. Grounding System: A network of grounding electrodes, typically buried metal rods or plates, is connected to the down conductors. These electrodes provide a low-resistance path for the lightning current to dissipate safely into the ground.
  4. Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): These devices are installed on electrical and data systems to prevent lightning-induced voltage surges from damaging sensitive equipment. SPDs divert excessive voltage to the ground.
  5. Bonding: Ensuring that all metal components of a structure are electrically connected to the lightning protection system, reducing the risk of side flashes or arcing.

Benefits of Lightning Protection

Lightning protection systems, such as lightning rods and grounding systems, offer crucial safeguards against the destructive power of lightning strikes. Lightning protection measures prevent and reduce damage while improving the safety of a site or a project.

  • Prevent fires and structural damage by safely conducting lightning away from the building.
  • Protect electrical and electronic systems, appliances and equipment from lightning-induced voltage surges.
  • Minimize the risk of injury or death to occupants of the building.
  • Comply with relevant lightning protection standards and codes.
